The Houston Texans have declared that contract negotiations with quarterback C.J. Stroud will be paused once the regular season commences. General manager Nick Caserio mentioned that if an agreement is not finalized prior to the team's opener against Buffalo on September 13, talks will be postponed until the next offseason.
Stroud, selected second overall in the 2023 draft, has had his fifth-year option exercised, ensuring his contract with the Texans extends through 2027. Although Caserio had suggested the possibility of an extension before the season, no deal has been reached.
At 24 years old, Stroud holds a record of 28-18 and has led the Texans to playoff appearances in each of his first three seasons. He earned the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year title in 2023 and recorded a career-high completion rate of 64% in 2025, contributing to a 12-5 season and a divisional playoff run.
However, he encountered difficulties in the postseason, including five interceptions in a loss to New England. Further information regarding future negotiations remains undisclosed.
