Marcel Brun, Ph.D., has been appointed as the new director of the Texas A&M AgriLife Genomics and Bioinformatics Service, effective September 1. He succeeds Charlie Johnson, Ph.D., who is retiring after 16 years of leadership at TxGen.
Brun has been part of TxGen, which is a division of Texas A&M AgriLife Research, since 2015, initially serving as the lead bioinformatics scientist and later as assistant director starting in 2024. He brings over two decades of experience in academia and genomics, with expertise in computational biology, mathematics, and high-throughput genomics.
G. Cliff Lamb, Ph.D., director of AgriLife Research, expressed confidence in Brun's capabilities, stating that his long-standing involvement with TxGen ensures continuity in leadership. Lamb highlighted Brun's scientific expertise and experience in mentoring as key strengths for his new role.
Brun holds a doctorate in computer science from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, and a degree in mathematics from the National University of Mar del Plata in Argentina. He has previously held positions at UNMdP and the Translational Genomics Research Institute in Phoenix, where he led the Algorithm Development Unit.
Since joining TxGen, Brun has been instrumental in developing the facility's computational infrastructure and bioinformatics capabilities. He emphasized his commitment to supporting researchers and enhancing the services provided by TxGen.
